Mountain man!

AN intrepid Portrush businessman is planning to climb two major European peaks this summer to raise funds for Cancer Research UK.

Estate agent, Barry Torrens, will scale Gran Paradiso, Italy’s highest mountain at 13,323 feet and then tackle Mont Blanc, western Europe’s highest mountain at 15,781ft, between July 17 and 23.

Barry told the Times: “I am paying all my own expenses so that every penny raised goes straight to Cancer Research UK.

“Training started in October - believe me I needed it - and I have lost one -and-a-half stones, with another one-and-a-half to go.

“Beep your horn in support if you see me out traing and please stop and help if I’m face down in the street,” quipped Barry.

In the past two years Barry has lost both an uncle and aunt to cancer and his mum Margaret has been undergoing treatment for breast cancer in recent months.

He says: “Cancer has blighted previous generations of my family and every penny raised hopefully will go to defeating this terrible disease.

“To assist in the Mont Blanc fundraising effort I am also organising ‘Barry’s Biker Babes Motorbike Rally’ on May 16, North West 200 Week.

“We have arranged for 50 bikers to rally from Belfast to Portrush, enjoy a barbecue then return with ‘Barry’s Biker Babes’ fundraisers as pillion passengers.

“Charles Hurst Motorbikes have donated a £12,000 motorbike as a potential prize to assist in the fundraising.”

Donations can be given to Barry’s project at www.justgiving.com/Barry-Torrens and by texting Mont 49 followed by the amount to 70070.

Barry says that for whatever reason, adverse weather conditions or injury, he doesn’t reach the summit of Mont Blanc all monies donated will still go towards Cancer Research UK.
