Mountain road closed seven times in five years

THE mountain road between Limavady and Coleraine was closed to traffic on seven occasions over the past five years - twice in 2010 already.

The Windyhill Road, between Limavady and Coleraine, was closed in February 2010 to allow sidefilling and resurfacing to take place.

It was closed again this month to allow resurfacing to take place.

DUP MLA Gregory Campbell asked the Roads Minister Conor Murphy to list the amount of closures since June 2005 and the reasons for each closure.

He said that on a number of the occasions when the road was closed, the opportunity was taken to carry out work at more than one location.

The most recent scheme, completed in June 2010, is the last of Roads Service's planned improvement schemes on the Windyhill Road.

In June 2005, reconstruction and resurfacing works were carried out; in February 2006, slip repairs and resurfacing undertaken; in October 2006, a major new watermain works installed; in July 2007, carriageway surface dressing undertaken; and in January 2008, culvert repairs were carried out.
