Mounted games a bigsuccess at Silverwood

MORE than 120 riders from across the UK and beyond descended on Silverwood Equestrian Centre for a fast paced Mounted Games competition.

Mounted Games is an equestrian discipline in which very fast relay races are performed by excellent riders of all ages on well-trained ponies.

The riders require a high degree of athletic ability, good riding skills, hand-to-eye coordination, determination and a competitive spirit.

Organised by the Northern Ireland Mounted Games Association and Craigavon Borough Council, the competition attracted equestrian competitors and teams from Scotland, England and Wales and even as far afield as the United States.

There was a wide range of competitions for all age groups, from over 40's to under 12's and the racing attracted rapturous applause from delighted family, friends and spectators that dropped in to watch attracted by the music and excitement.

Deputy Mayor of Craigavon, Councillor Kieran Corr attended the event.

He said: “This prestigious event is the focal point of the year for the Mounted Games and I am delighted it attracted such a high number of international visitors to our wonderful Borough. The event provided a great opportunity to showcase Silverwood Equestrian Centre as the venue for next years European Mounted Games Championships.”

He added: “I would like to congratulate all the winners on the day and everyone who took part in this thrilling event.”
