Move over Gok Wan - Carl’s here

MOVE over Gok Wan - a Lisburn student could be stealing your show.

Carl Elliott, a student at the South Eastern Regional College, beat off competition from over fifty other competitors to win a Gok Wan style ‘Fashion Fix’ competition held at the campus at the Downpatrick campus of SERC.

The hairdressing students from Lisburn and Downpatrick competed in the end of year skills competition that challenged them to create a head-to-toe look for a model.

During the competition they were required to come up with a whole look for a model including hair, make-up, clothing and footwear.

Traditional hairdressing competitions are judged solely on hairstyle but this was designed to challenge the students to think beyond that and consider a person’s whole appearance picking clothes, shoes and make-up to match their hairstyle.

The competition was judged by top Northern Irish hairstylist Jimmy Beech of Wella and Synergy Hair, along with Pamela Ferguson, Assistant Head of School for Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy at SERC. Before the competition began Jimmy gave the students some hints and tips on how to approach the challenge.

Pamela commented; “The students worked very hard throughout the year learning new styling techniques and the competition was a nice way to finish the year and let the students showcase their skills whilst competing against their peers in a fun environment.

“The standard of the competition was extremely high and as a judge I had a very difficult job trying to pick a winner. I would like to congratulate everyone who took part, I am sure that it has proved a valuable experience for everyone. I would also like to thank Jimmy for helping with the judging and for passing on some of his knowledge to the students.”
