Moyle council rejects request for PSNI praise

COUNCILLORS in Moyle have rejected a request from UUP member William Graham to send a letter to the PSNI praising its handling of the recent riots in Belfast.

Speaking at a meeting of the council in Ballycastle on Monday of last week, Cllr Graham said:

“I would ask council to support me in sending a letter to the Chief Constable congratulating the PSNI on its handling of the riotous behaviour in Belfast over the Twelfth period.”

But Sinn Fein’s Cara McShane said: “I thought we didn’t send letters of congratulations as a council?”

Cllr McShane said she would like to see the Orange Order engage with local communities in those areas in which there are “a handful of contentious parades each year”.

“I wouldn’t support this (sending of a letter).”

Cllr Graham said: “Well I’ll be bringing it up at the DPP (District Policing Partnership).

“I thought it would have been nice to have it from a broader base such as council but some people don’t agree with that.”
