Moyle councillors hold Minute’s Silence for Dr Mary Burns

AT the request of Moyle representative Catherine McCambridge, Moyle councillors stood for a minute’s silence in tribute to the late Dr Mary Burns, the well known GP from Armoy, who passed away recently.

Speaking at the main monthly meeting of Moyle Council in Ballycastle on June 13, Cllr McCambridge said: “As a Glens councillor I would like to pay tribute to the late Dr Mary Burns of Armoy.

“It was a privilege to have been acquainted with Mary, a dignified lady with quiet but firm determination. A local G.P., she was held in high regard by patients, colleagues and those in the allied professions.

“A lady of foresight, she, along with others, strove to make a positive impact on the everyday lives of the people of the Armoy area where her professional knowledge and “whole person” approach made an invaluable contribution to the health, education, sporting and social aspects of the local community.

“Over the days of her wake and funeral, those who knew her best spoke of the selfless courage of a wife, mother and friend, during her year-long journey with terminal cancer. They spoke of how she was sustained by her strong faith, the care and devotion of her husband Gerry and their children and the support of a network of close family and friends.

“In paying tribute to Dr Mary I also wish to add that, in a fitting and practical tribute to the Burns Family, following Mary’s death on Wednesday, Armoy and the wider community provided a network of volunteers who assumed responsibility and swung into action to organise practical aspects of the three day wake and Saturday’s Funeral Mass and burial.

“This co-operation of local schools, sporting clubs, parish and P.S.N.I. ensured that the organizational skills employed in management of vast numbers of local mourners and those from all over Ireland and other parts of the world was seamless, and, the provision of a video-link enabled the service to be relayed to many members of the congregation in a marquee within the church grounds.

“Mary contributed so much during her 19 years in north Antrim. May she Rest-in-Peace,” said Cllr McCambridge.

Moyle Council Chairperson, Cllr Padraig McShane, thanked Cllr McCambridge for the remarks about Dr Burns.
