MP condemns ‘cowardly act of terrorism’

There has been widespread condemnation of those responsible for leaving a viable pipe bomb under the railway bridge at Whitehouse Park on Saturday evening, September 27.

A number of properties in the area had to be evacuated while Army Technical Officers examined the device. Disruption was also caused to rail services on the Belfast-Larne Line.

Residents were eventually allowed to return to their homes at around 12.45am on Sunday.

“It was act of extreme recklessness to place a viable explosive device in this residential area. Those responsible were prepared to place innocent members of the public at risk of serious harm. Whatever cause they sought to advance by this cowardly act of terrorism will be rejected by the vast majority of society,” said North Belfast MP Nigel Dodds.

“While it remains uncertain who was behind this direct attack on the local area, one thing is clear - the community remains united in condemning this kind of thuggish behaviour and won’t allow those behind it to drag us back to the past,” Cllr Billy Webb added.

Investigating officers have appealed for anyone with information about the incident to contact them at Newtownabbey Station on 101, or to call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
