MP donates £1k to charity

UPPER Bann MP David Simpson raised £3,304 as a result of his annual charity sit-out in his constituency - but he was only able to do two-thirds of the effort this year.

Trouble was, the weather for the Portadown ‘leg’ of the sit-out was foul, and - with so few people braving the elements - it simply wasn’t on. So he dipped into his own funds and donated £1,000 to make up the total. The MP in a statement praised the generosity of the constituents he met on his Lurgan and Banbridge all-day efforts.

He said, “During what continues to be an extremely tough time on the economic front, due to the worldwide recession, the people of Upper Bann have once again come up trumps by demonstrating their kindness and generosity. The combined total presently stands at £3,304.00, which really is an outstanding amount, given the current state of the economy.

“I want to thank everyone for their support; particularly the schools who came to the sit-out and gave their support with some lovely carol singing. I would also like to express my gratitude to the traders who came forward with coffee, tea, soup and stew during the sit-outs and to anyone who contributed in any way.”
