Mr Simpson said, “I have been alarmed at the level of burglaries in these areas over the past number of weeks; there have been several in the Dollingstown, Magheralin, the Mourneview estate area and also in the town centre with three businesses having been targeted.

“This is worrying in a day and age when there is more education and promotion of keeping your property secured, however, we have planned to take a number of steps to try and address the matter in a practical way.

“We have had several requests following the burglaries to commence Neighbourhood watch schemes in the areas and we are working with the PSNI in this regard. We also have been to the fore within Council making additional provision with burglary packs to help vulnerable and older people. Within the packs there is a number of items aimed at making you and your home safer with a 24-hour plug in timer, a minder sneak in alarm, a safe can and a personal attack alarm.

“We have a number of these to distribute throughout the community and I am making them available from the DUP office in Lurgan. Please contact the office on 028 3831 0088. There are limited resources so it will be a first come, first served basis. The DUP remain committed to tackling crime and these two steps are our initial attempt to help tackle this blight on our society.”
