MS carer Raymond’sawards recognition

Mr McGinn, was one of three finalists in his category and was invited to attend the prestigious MS Society awards ceremony in London on September 27, 2011.

He was nominated by his daughter, Deborah, and a second nomination for Raymond was also sent in from Foyle Branch member and Vice Chair, Naomi O’Loughlin.

Raymond’s wife Marie was diagnosed with MS 39 years ago and has used a wheelchair permanently for the past 29 years.

In the 1980s, Raymond suffered complications as a result of major surgery and has been unable to work ever since but he remains dedicated to the needs of his wife.

“It’s nice, but I don’t do it to win awards - I just do it for the satisfaction of helping people,” he said.

Extending his congratulations to Raymond, the Mayor said he was delighted Raymond’s work as chairman of the local charity and caring for his wife who has been suffering with MS for almost 40 years, was formally acknowledged.

“Raymond is one of many people across the city and region who are working tirelessly to promote the work of the MS Society by creating awareness of the condition and offering support to families and friends.

“His commitment, and caring dedication for his wife has been tireless despite his own healthcare problems and I am delighted that he has been honoured in this way,” the Mayor commented.

The Foyle Branch of MS , of which Raymond is the chairman, is one of the Mayor’s chosen charities for his Mayoral year along with the Foyle branch of Parkinson’s UK.
