Much done but more to do, says EYF

The Enagh Youth Forum says the decision by the Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Governance and Strategic Planning Committee to approve funding for a “long over due children’s play park in Strathfoyle” will help transform an area that it says has been neglected for too long.

The Committee decided to commit to funding the park in full and it is now expected that the project could be completed by April 2017.

A spokesperson for the Forum said: “We at EYF would like to thank everyone who took part in the play park campaign over these past number of years. “The number one community need that has existed in this community for many years will now be met and a play park delivered.

“We thank Sinn Féin, The SDLP and all of the Independent Councillors who supported today’s (December 1) motion on the play park.

“We thank Eamonn McCann and all the other grassroots community activists for campaigning with us over the past number of years. The main people that deserve thanks here isn’t any political parties, it is the local people and the children here who have waited so long for this play park plan to become a reality.”

The local Forum won’t be resting on its laurels following the announcement, however.

“EYF will now take time to re-charge our batteries and straight after Christmas we will be re-focusing our energies on working with the Rural Area Partnership In Derry (RAPID) and all other local groups and Council to continue with the implementation of the Strathfoyle Community Plan 2015-2020,” the spokesperson added.

Top of the agenda are securing a Multi-Use Games Area for the area and securing the greenway extension out to Strathfoyle along the River Foyle.
