Ann Mayne and Joni Wilson celebrated as the British Museum and the Marsh Christian Trust held their annual awards, which recognise best practice and innovative ways in which volunteers work in museums and galleries.

Ann and Joni have been volunteering with Carrickfergus Borough Council for three and two years respectively. Their main focus has been in the role of tour guide at the Andrew Jackson Cottage & US Rangers Centre. Because of the contribution of volunteers, it has been possible to open the facility more frequently to the public, increasing visitor figures and providing a much richer visitor experience.

Joanna Mackle, deputy director of the British Museum, said: “The Marsh Awards recognise this valuable support that volunteers give to our museums and we are very grateful to the Marsh Christian Trust for acknowledging this important work.”

The Mayor, Alderman Charles Johnston, added: “To win the regional award is quite an achievement and a well-deserved acknowledgement of two volunteers who continue to go above and beyond in their roles.

“As members of the local living history group, Ann and Joni both have extensive knowledge about the site and local area. They also bring a wealth of experience in dealing with the public and immerse themselves in the history of the Jackson family.”

“Well done Anne and Joni and to all of our dedicated volunteers whose hard work goes such a long way to enhancing our visitor’s experience.”
