Music Festival plans abandoned

PLANS to hold an outdoor internationally established Cultural Music Festival in Ballymoney have been abandoned.

The news comes despite Ballymoney Borough Council giving their support for a WOMAD Festival to be staged at Leslie Hill estate.

Standing for World of Music, Arts and Dance, WOMAD has already held more than 160 festivals in 27 countries and islands all over the world and has attracted famous artists including Peter Gabriel, Nina Simone, The House Martins and Neneh Cherry.

It was believed the Ballymoney festival could attract thousands of visitors to the area and boast as many as seven stages as well as a global village of shops with international arts, crafts and cuisine stalls.

Described as a 'fantastic boost for the local economy' at a previous Council meeting, the news was revealed last week that the plans ‘have been abandoned’.

However at the recent Development Committee meeting, the report added: ‘The proposed WOMAD/Leslie Hill Productions Music Festival has been abandoned. However it is intended to plan other events.’
