The band, led by Pipe Major Richard Parkes, was celebrating its success after winning in front of a crowd of 35,000.

The band, who won the title for the second consecutive year, beat the Scottish Power band into second place as thousands of pipers and drummers from more than 200 bands took part in the competition.

Around 8,000 pipers and drummers descended on Glasgow from 12 different nations to take part in the qualifiers and finals.

And Field Marshal Montgomery — one of the most successful pipe bands in history — was not the only band from Northern Ireland to triumph.

Clogher & District was crowned World Champions in its grade, 4B.

It also claimed a World Champion Drum Corps title.

In Grade 4A, Tullylagan Pipe Band from Cookstown, Bready Ulster Scots Pipe Band and Syrela and District were all placed. Ballybriest Pipe Band took the World Championship prize in Grade 3B as well as the World Championship Drum Corps honours.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland’s band took second place in the category.

It was followed by Co Down bands Moneygore in third place and Gransha in fourth place.

David Scott, from the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association in Northern Ireland, said: “A World Championship title coming home to Northern Ireland, competing against bands from Scotland, England, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, I just think it’s a marvellous achievement and it’s something Northern Ireland should be very proud of.”
