Mystery surrounds damaged railings

COUNCIL staff have been unable to determine who is responsible for damage to railings at Carrickfergus harbour.

Minutes of the Estates Management sub committee, presented to members this week, suggest the railings, sections of which have been surrounded by safety barriers throughout the summer, were damaged by a boat that was tied to them.

Asked for further details during Monday’s Building Services committee meeting, Stephen Johnston, the department’s director, told members marina staff are not aware of any boat ever having been tied to the damaged railings.

Mr Johnston cast doubt on this conclusion, suggesting that rope marks can be seen, but acknowledged that it has been impossible to say who was responsible. A cost for repairs has now been sought.
