Mystery surrounds WW1 memorial scroll

Anne McConnell came across the document by accident at her home in Whitehead, after picking up an old framed photograph of her late father, Magheramorne man Frank McConnell.

“The frame fell apart and out came this scroll. It must have been tucked behind the photograph,” she explained.

“I have no idea how it got there. It is in memory of Private Matthew McMeehan, Canadian Infantry Battalion.”

The Memorial Scrolls, from King George V, were issued after the First World War to the next-of-kin of all British and Empire service personnel who were killed as a result of the war.

The scrolls were issued along with a bronze medallion, which became known as a Dead Man’s Penny.

Anne found no trace of a medallion, but she hopes local people may be able to help track down Mr McMeehan’s descendants, so the scroll can be safely delivered to them.
