The Perfect Library started in spring with a search for Northern Ireland’s preferred novels and hundreds of nominations were then refined, by a team of library staff, into the Perfect Library list.

The final list contains 164 titles with novels representing a diverse range of genres from horror to crime, science fiction to mystery and romance to children’s classics; illustrating the Northern Ireland public’s wide range of reading tastes.

As the winner, Roger will receive all 164 titles shortlisted, the perfect prize for the avid reader.

The Perfect Library final selection includes a wide range of novels ranging from guilty pleasures to those that represent an annual pilgrimage for the entrant, to remind themselves of their favourite character and their life story.

Classic novels like To Kill a Mockingbird and Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights can be found within the list alongside future-focused Holywood movie titles like The Hunger Games and Frank Herbert’s Dune.

Also included are a number of titles which have since made it onto the silver screen, including The Color Purple by Alice Walker, Tracy Chevalier’s Girl with a Pearl Earring, and Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell.

Several of the novels on the list are part of a larger series, including JK Rowling’s Harry Potter and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, by Douglas Adams.

Commenting on the titles, Libraries NI Chief Executive Irene Knox said:“The list of nominated novels illustrates the breadth of reading styles and wide-ranging interests of our customers and refining the list was a difficult task.

“The final list has something for everyone and we hope that people will come into the library to see what others recommend and to borrow that book from the list that they never quite got round to reading.

“What better way of finding the ‘perfect’ book or books to enjoy during the summer holidays?”
