Nan's mouth-watering sandwich

LONDONDERRY woman Nan McQuilken has proved that she is a cut above the rest this week after being named the regional winner of leading bread brand Kingsmill's Masterpiece sandwich competition.

Nan who sent in a mouth watering recipe for a cream with crystallised ginger and glace cherries sandwich beat off competition from all over the county and will now join five other winners from across Northern Ireland to compete in a Masterchef style cook-off.

Kingsmill launched its bid to find the province’s best sandwich recipe with the help of Michelin star chef Michael Deane in February after the brand was named Northern Ireland’s favourite loaf, and Kingsmill Marketing Executive Andrew Hollywood is delighted with the high standard of entries.

The Kingsmill Masterpiece Grand Final will be hosted by Kingsmill and Michael Deane at Deanes Restaurant on Howard Street on Friday, May 28th 2010.

Each regional winner has been invited to bring along a few friends and family members and re-create their sandwich recipe in front of a panel of judges. Each county finalist will take home a top of the range sandwich grill and a year’s supply of Kingsmill bread with the overall winner walking away with a private cookery experience for up to six people with the Michelin star chef himself.

Nan’s cream with crystallised ginger and glace cherries sandwich will compete against County Fermanagh’s coronation chicken sandwich, County Down’s smoked cheese, pesto, roasted peppers and onions, sundried tomato and rocket sandwich, County Armagh’s ‘Stormont’ deli sandwich, County Antrim’s fish finger, watercress and lemon pepper mayonnaise sandwich and County Tyrone’s ‘breakfast’ sandwich.
