BALLYMONEY Borough Council has witnessed nearly a 3% increase in the amount of waste being sent to landfill.

The worrying figures for June, July and August were revealed during a recent Health and Environmental Services Committee meeting.

In response to the news, the Director answered members questions during the discussion which ensued.

He then emphasized that Committee/Council needed to give serious consideration to the Council’s NILAS targets given that with the postponement of RPA it would now be Ballymoney Borough Council which would have the responsibility of complying with the very onerous 2012-2013 target where there was another stepped change in the amount of waste Council could send directly to landfill.

He also advised that in order to avoid fines Council had only the next financial year to develop the necessary interventions.

He added: “It is my intent to again report on this important matter at the Committee’s October meeting.”
