THE current economic climate, and increase in the unemployment register, has made the move from benefit into sustainable employment even more difficult for those who have no recent work history and who are aged 50 or over.

Step Ahead 50+, administered by A4e - will provide this targeted group with work experience and a recent employment history which will enable them to compete more effectively for jobs in the current economic climate.

It is also important that people are prepared for job opportunities when the downturn ends. Dervock & District Community Association are delighted that Robert Rodgers and Leonard ‘Hen’ Greer have been appointed as an Environmental workers in the local community.

Frankie Cunningham (Chairperson) commented: “This initiative certainly complements the voluntary work by Pat McLernon and has positively transformed the aesthetic appearance of the village.

“Although Leonard (Hen) Greer and Robert Rodgers have only been in place four weeks, the feedback from local residents already recognises that their village is certainly looking a lot cleaner than usual, improving community spirit and activating a sense of pride in the village.

“This six-month scheme couldn’t have arrived at a more opportune time with other programmes being co-ordinated to facilitate the regeneration of the village of Dervock - the Streetscape programme (RDP Village Renewal & Development—measure 3.5) we were able to make improvements to a number of derelict buildings and improve the overall appearance of our village.

“We have also made significant steps towards a new community hall, changing room facilities, upgrading football pitches—and a new disabled fishing stand at Riverside Park Working in partnership with Ballymoney Borough Council (Dervock Project Team) commitment has been granted for a MUGA pitch & Outdoor Activity/Gym area located in the Riverside Park, (Fair Hill) Dervock (RDP Village Renewal & Development—measure 3.5) proposed plans for an obelisk celebrating the impact of the linen industry in the village and the renovation of the War memorial garden – which will leave the village prepared to welcome increased footfall from potential tourists.

“There is now an opportunity for the community of Dervock (preference will be given to senior citizens) to avail of the service of two workers who are available to carry out jobs, for example, minor repairs/maintenance, gardening, minor painting, fencing.”
