Neill ASBO application adjourned

AN application to place an Anti Social Behaviour Order (ASBO) on one of Coleraine's most prolific offenders was adjourned last Wednesday.

The application, by the PSNI, would prevent Peter Neill (41) of Hazelbank Road, from entering certain areas in Coleraine, in particular, West Bann.

Neill, who has 170 previous convictions, is one of the key witnesses in the murder investigation of Catholic father-of-four, Kevin McDaid in Coleraine last May.

The conditions of the ASBO would restrict Neill's movements, preventing him from being on any street or alleyway within the Coleraine Borough Council area between 10am and 6am.

Neill would be unable to associate with four other men, namely Alan Stanfield, Andrew Stanfield, Christopher Doey and Jason Mann, if the ASBO application is successful.

Using foul, offensive, sectarian or intimidating language to any person is also a condition of the ASBO.

At last Wednesday’s court, the application was adjourned until March 12, when a date will be fixed for the hearing.

Court heard that Neill will be appealing a sentence for disorderly behaviour handed out at North Antrim Magistrates' Court on January 6.

A defence barrister told the court that the appeal was ‘ongoing’ before Judge Smith and would be heard on March 8.

A barrister said that the Judge was ‘minded’ to give Neill community service, however he said that there were ‘issues’ surrounding the defendant’s security.
