Nelson seeks solution

The SDLP’s Joe Nelson was speaking after a long catalogue of anti-social behaviour in the Shankill estate was revealed.

He said: “This has been going on for a long time, with young ones of all ages involved in all types of behaviour.

“The police are very limited in what they can do. They move the youngsters on, but ten minutes later they are back again.

“The people living here are at the end of their tether.

“The culprits age from anywhere between 12 and 18-years-old.”

He continued: “One instance was reported to me in which a young lady urinated at a resident’s front door. Another time, a young man was running around naked kicking people’s fences.

“Unfortunately, this seems to be a fairly frequent thing.

“There was talk of getting it gated off, but this isn’t possible or practical. At the end of the day, it comes down to the parents. They need to be aware of what their children are up to at night.

“I understand the social background some of these people are coming from, but they are still causing problems for the area’s residents.”

He continued: “We are working hard to come to some sort of solution to this. I have organised a meeting with the PSNI and Sarah Wilson of Community Safety Partnership, and hopefully something constructive will come out of that.”
