Nena to help build homes for the poor in Ethiopia

Nena, who studies geography at the University of Ulster at Coleraine, will be part of a Habitat for Humanity team.

Together with family and friends, she has been engaged in fundraising to help pay travel and accommodation costs amounting to £1,500. Quiz nights, raffles and sponsorship from the credit union, Larne Rotary Club and Larne Grammar School funded the three-week project and Nena said she is very grateful to everyone who has helped her on her way.

In the past three years, Habitat Northern Ireland, in partnership with teams from the university, has delivered 150 homes to Ethiopian families in need. Habitat is committed to “addressing key challenges faced by poor Ethiopians, with the long term goal of resolving marginalisation of vulnerable families, improving health and sanitation and ultimately helping families to build their way out of poverty”.

Larne Credit Union, which presented Nena with a cheque last week, said: “Habitat’s goals are in keeping with the work of the foundation set up by the Irish League of Credit Unions to further cooperation and self-help in Third World countries.

Ethiopia is one of the countries where the foundation is operating and, on that basis, Larne Credit Union is pleased to support Nena’s project.”
