New banner

A NEW banner is to be unfurled for the 18th annual Broadisland Gathering, and will help to launch a new parade at the event.

The banner has been designed by last summer's P7 class in Ballycarry Primary School and will be carried annually in the pageant parade at the Gathering to represent the school.

Pupils from the class will attend the official unveiling, which takes place tomorrow (Friday) at 7.15pm at the community centre and is open to all.

The banner will be unveiled by Mrs Margaret Anderson, who retired from the school this year after a lengthy service to the teaching profession.

Following the unveiling ceremony, the banner will lead the area's townland banners as a procession takes place to the General Steele memorial for a wreath-laying in honour of the war dead of the area.

The Ballycarry Community Association says that the 40th anniversary of the formation of the Ulster Defence Regiment and those who served within its ranks will also be commemorated.
