New bike for Big Pedal winner

On Wednesday May 6 Pamela Grove-White, Sustrans active travel officer was delighted to present a voucher for a bike to a P1 pupil from St Kieran’s Primary School in Poleglass.

St Kieran’s was the top school in the Lisburn, Down and Newry Active School Travel Programme area which ran its own Big Pedal inter area competition.

There were twelve schools in the area which took part with lots of cycling and scooting on the journey to school.

The top school was presented with a voucher for a bike which was then given to a pupil after a whole school draw.

The winning pupil will be off soon to J Hanna’s in Lisburn to choose a new bike.

Brian McAlea, Principal of St Kieran’s P.S.Poleglass said: “It is wonderful to see so many children cycling, scooting and walking to school and taking part in The Big Pedal competition.

“Even in the rain, the children were picking the healthier option.

“The parents have also been supporting this initiative, long may it continue.

“This is a small step in changing the mind-sets of a lot of people to choose the healthier option.’

Carmel Stanley, teacher and school active travel champion at St Kieran’s said: “The children enjoyed the Big Pedal.

“Everyone is so pleased that this pupil has won the bike voucher, her parents are so pleased too.”
