New bin is a
welcome move

One of the downsides of being one of the most popular bakeries in town, is that litter can become a nuisance as people discard their white paper bags in a rush to get stuck into their tasty sausage roll or delightful jammy joey.

This was the problem facing Lurgan’s popular bakery, The Kosy, and after contacting local Councillor Colin McCusker, Craigavon Council provided a dedicated waste bin to try and alleviate the build-up of litter in the area.

Councillor McCusker said: “Litter is a big problem right across the Borough. Personally, I believe we all have a duty to keep our towns tidy, my motto is - bring it home or use a bin. However, for some people that message is not getting through and unfortunately it falls on the council to collect litter.

“Popular food outlets, such as the Kosy Bakery are prone to a build-up of litter and it was obvious that there was a lack of bin provision at this busy junction.

“I was delighted when I managed to get this bin situated close to the Bakery, and already it has having the desired effect, and the Kosy are delighted.”

Aaron Carson, Ulster Unionist Candidate said: “As someone who works on Union Street, as well as being a regular of the Kosy bakery, I was acutely aware that the owners wanted to address the litter problem and wanted some help from the local council. The Litter Dept were very quick to respond to our request and following the site survey the bin was in situ. This is the type of response that we hope we will continue to get from the much enlarged super council, and we will be ensuring services improve for Lurgan.”

John Dummigan of the Kosy said: “We were becoming conscious of the litter problem outside our premises. We made every effort to ask our patrons not to litter, but it wasn’t working. We contacted Colin McCusker and within a matter of hours there was a litter warden on site doing a survey. This haS made a real difference to the area.”
