First Carnfunnock Scouts is an open, cross community group for boys and girls aged four to 14-plus.

It will cater for all sections; from young Squirrels to older Scouts and the leaders have been working hard to develop a varied programme for the year ahead.

Group Scout leader, Michael Kane said: “We are unaware of any other park facilities in the Mid and East Antrim area with links to the Scouting movement and we anticipate that the new group will be fully engaged with the park community.

“We aim to serve the young people of the surrounding area in the best tradition of the Scout Association, developing their personalities and helping them to learn life skills.”

Cub Scout leader, Paul Wynn identified the opportunities that Carnfunnock offers.

“We believe that Carnfunnock is an ideal location to provide the outdoor experiences for which the Scouts are known, whilst having facilities available to enable us to provide a balanced programme with a definite outdoor theme,” he said.

“The weekly programme for all sections is designed to include seasonal changes in the park and its wildlife and focus on specific areas coinciding with; nature based, community and social, national awareness days and projects, for example National Badger Day, National Red Squirrel Week, RSPB Surveys, UNICEF Day for Change, Scout Community Week and National Tree Week, just to mention a few.

“As much of our time as possible will be spent outside, having fun, enjoying fresh air, getting exercise and embracing the seasonal changes. It is an exciting prospect, and learning through play is something we never grow too old to enjoy.”

The group will be meeting on Friday nights from 6.30pm to 9.30pm weekly.

The Scouting programme of activities for all sections is based around three themes: outdoor and adventure, world and skills and also to develop leadership, teamwork and personal development.
