New CCTV cameras

FOUR additional CCTV cameras have been installed in both Lurgan and Portadown – to help in the fight against crime.

Two of the new cameras have been installed in William Street and Millennium Way in Lurgan, with two more for Portadown.

There are now 20 CCTV cameras operating within the Borough helping in the fight against crime and reassuring members of the public.

Over the last nine years the cameras have played a very successful part in the ‘tool kit’ to fight crime and disorder in the Borough of Craigavon.

Councillor McGoldrick, Chair of the Craigavon Community Safety Partnership said: “We are delighted to be able to announce the addition of four new cameras to the Craigavon area.

"Reducing criminal activity and the fear of crime is an ongoing process these new cameras and information on how protect your valuables when out and about will help achieve that for those living and shopping within the Borough."

Chief Inspector Jason Murphy the Area Commander for Craigavon said: "We know that CCTV cameras deter criminals and make people feel safer. We use CCTV footage daily to assist in investigations and there are many good news stories associated with CCTV.

"These additional cameras are a welcome addition to Portadown and Lurgan and will significantly enhance our ability to identify issues as they develop and to detect more crime."

The extra cameras are part of the wider approach to tackling criminal activity and anti-social behaviour when it occurs in the Borough and an explanatory leaflet on how they work has been developed and distributed.

In addition, the Council, the CCSP and Craigavon PSNI have developed and distributed posters and leaflets on how to keep safe and valuables protected when out and about.

The personal safety section of the leaflet gives tips on how to protect purses and wallets from being lost and stolen, the reporting of suspicious behaviour, parking in well lit areas near to CCTV cameras and advising vulnerable individuals to carry personal alarms.
