New community arts programme launched

“In Lisburn we believe the arts are all about participation,” said Chairman for Lisburn City Council’s Leisure Services Committee, Councillor Thomas Beckett at the launch of ISLAND Arts Centre’s Community Arts and Education programme.

Describing the brochure as “a fantastic showcase for the Arts”, Councillor Beckett continued: “This packed programme offers a range of traditional as well as more experimental arts projects free-at-the-point-of-access taking place from January 2013.

“The Island Arts Centre invites schools, community groups, voluntary organisations and those in the creative industries to be inspired, take part and try something new.”

The Island Arts Centre’s Community Arts Practitioners will work with groups developing arts and creative skills which can be employed to develop personal and social skills, explore ideas and raise awareness of local issues.

“All of this will enhance the enjoyment and cultural experience of all who use it, reenergizing our communities and making Lisburn a more attractive place in which to live and to visit,” concluded Councilor Beckett.

David Sloan Chairperson of Lisburn Arts Advisory Committee said: “The launch of this dedicated Community Arts and Education brochure provides countless opportunities for residents in the city to socialise, be self-expressive, foster a sense of pride and ownership and to keep healthy, both mentally and physically. It also acts as a shop window for a wealth of funding opportunities.”

One of the highlights of the new brochure is the launch of the Island Youth Theatre, led by industry professional Simon Cunningham, Director of Showcase Productions NI.

“I am extremely excited to be running the Island Youth Theatre and already have lots of ideas for the group,” said Simon.

“The opportunity is open to anyone between the ages of 12 and 19 who want to take part. You don’t need to have done any theatre or performance before.

“Free weekly workshops, beginning on Saturday January 19, will focus on a range of performance and musical theatre techniques leading to final performances at the Island Arts Centre.

“Be warned spaces are limited and are offered on a first-come first-served basis.”
