New Corran Primary School plan to come before council planning committee

The new school, which would be situated on lands at Seacourt Road, Brittania Crescent, Black Cave Park and to the rear of Cairn Grove, is being recommended for approval by planners.

The development would include a seven class integrated primary school and single nursery unit with associated outdoor play areas, boundary treatment, access and parking arrangements.

Pupils are currently taught in seven mobile classrooms.

A report due to be presented to councillors states that the proposal “represents a real investment in education which is in the public interest and contributes to the ongoing regeneration of education infrastructure throughout the borough.”

It reveals that 19 representations of support and four objection letters were received over the proposal. Grounds for objection included road safety, congestion, parking and views of the sea and mountains being interrupted.

However, the document says planners are satisfied that “an adequate level of parking has been provided and that safe access and egress can be successfully achieved.”

It adds: “It is acknowledged that as with all schools there will be times that are busy, however the infrastructure proposed is capable of dealing with such demand, particularly if managed appropriately by the end user.”

Planners also say the new school “will not have a significant or detrimental visual impact” on views from homes.
