New council strikes rate for forthcoming year

Members of Causeway Coast and Glens Council agreed on a 1.5 percent rates increase at meeting in Cloonavin on Thursday night.

The historic meeting, to strike the first rate of the new district council was described as ‘farcical’ at one point, as members failed to agree on any figure.

After over an hour of debate, Chief Executive David Jackson asked members to break into their party groups and discuss their positions.

After the recess, a proposal by Sein Fein’s Phillip McGuigan for a 1.5 percent increase was carried by 15 votes to ten.
