New crossing proposed for notorious Morgan's Hill Road in Cookstown

Local DUP MLA Ian McCrea and Mid Ulster UUP Councillor Trevor Wilson recently met with residents to discuss options.

In a joint statement the politicians explained the discussions followed a few near accidents involving children.

They said, “Having spoken with Transport NI - Traffic Section and the police to discuss this important matter, we have corresponded with these agencies to ensure that measures are put in place to make the area safer for pedestrians.

“Transport NI have brought forward proposals such as changing the existing crossing to a newer PUFFIN crossing, which hopefully will provide a safer crossing as these lights are controlled by a sensor which manages the time provided for people to cross and will only change back to green once everyone is safely across.

“This type of traffic light system is designed to improve safety for all pedestrians but is particularly beneficial to children, people with disabilities and the elderly.

“Other measures such as better signage are also being considered which will hopefully help people realise that traffic lights are in operation which is especially important when school children are going to or coming from school.

“Having met with representatives of Cookstown North Community Group it was agreed by them that the proposed PUFFIN crossing would be a positive way forward.”

Mr McCrea and Councillor Wilson said they welcomed the initiative and looked forward to Transport NI installing the lights in the area as soon as possible in the interests of public safety.
