New economic strategy for Larne is launched

LARNE Council has unveiled its economic development strategy for the borough over the next four years.

The strategy document, launched through the economic development forum, has eight main themes that seek to address the current key economic issues in the borough up to 2015, including economic growth, reducing unemployment, international linkages, retail development, rural development, business networking, the image of Larne, and joint collaboration projects with other local councils.

There are a number of challenging targets set out in the document over the next four years, such as the creation of 50 additional jobs through innovation and incubation support, as well as Exploring Enterprise and Youth support programmes delivered to help tackle local unemployment.

The strategy also lays out plans for the organisation of three international trade missions, the formation of Larne Business Networking Club, mentoring support delivered to rural businesses, participation in at least five joint collaboration initiatives with other councils, and Support for local business awards and marketing initiatives

Chief Executive of Larne Borough Council, Geraldine McGahey said: “We are committed to economic development in our borough, supporting business and employment opportunities for all. Working in partnership through Larne Development Forum and LEDCOM, this strategy demonstrates the council’s commitment to this important agenda.

“The council fully appreciates the challenges to the local economy including unemployment, the need for more investment and jobs and the current economic climate.

“Businesses face major challenges such as new technology, rising costs, global competition and recession.

“Nevertheless, there is optimism that by working together, much can be achieved over the next four years to help sustain and grow the local economy.”
