New flood warning signs welcomed

MID-ULSTER UUP MLA Sandra Overend has welcomed a commitment from the Roads Service to install new flood warning signage on the Knockinroe Road, Stewartstown.

Ms Overend said: “I have been in contact with the Roads Service Safety Officer who assures that new flood warning road signs is the best that they can do.

“The Knockinroe Road is low lying and during prolonged spells of rain is unfortunately quite susceptible to heavy flooding along the Ballinderry River.

“On numerous occasions over the past fifty years there have been motorists, particularly those unfamiliar with the area, caught unawares by the dangerous flooding.

“Not so many years ago a milk tanker of United Dairy Farmers became stranded due to a lack of adequate signage. Previous roadside signs alerting motorists to potential flooding on this road had not been replaced.

“For this reason I welcome the Roads Service decision to install appropriate signage at the junction with the Lisnahall Road and on the approach to the most badly affected part of the road, and urge motorists to continue to exercise caution when travelling in this area in adverse weather conditions.”
