New footbridge to improve access for train users

“We are pleased to be beginning the process of constructing a new footbridge at Jordanstown. Subject to completion of a business case and availability of funding, it is planned to build the footbridge in 2015/16. Extensive consultation will take place with relevant local stakeholders prior to the start of the bridge works,” a spokesperson for the company told the Times.

East Antrim MLA Alastair Ross, who has pressed for the re-introduction of the footbridge at Jordanstown station over the last two sessions of the NI Assembly, welcomed confirmation from Minister Danny Kennedy that the work is to go ahead.

“The original footbridge was removed in the early 1980s when the passenger frequency on the Larne Line was being reduced. Since that period, the railways have been saved and are continuing to prosper. Jordanstown now has a new park and ride and it is important that commuters can access the Belfast platform without having to wait on traffic barriers at the Jordanstown Road,” he said.

“I have pressed this matter with the Minister, especially in the period prior to roadworks on the A2 commencing, to ensure that the trains can take the strain. I am delighted that there is now a firm timescale for the footbridge construction and that this will be a permanent structure rather than a stop-gap measure.”

Mr Ross met at the site last week with Frank Moore, Translink NI Railways Route Manager, and local councillor Ken Robinson, who has also been lobbying on the issue.

“I must commend both Translink for the effort that they have put in to the Larne Line in the last decade and the work of local representatives such as Councillor Robinson who have also pressed for improvements and are now seeing them come to fruition,” the DUP man added.
