Plans have been made to build 72 family homes on the Lurgan street, with a public consultation already underway.

A statement from the PR company currently conducting the consultation said that the response so far had been very positive:

“We are currently in the process of carrying out a 12 week community consultation on a proposed residential development comprising of around 72 family homes and we are keen to make sure that we have engaged with as many people as possible and sought feedback.”

A community exhibition is being hosted in Lurgan Town Hall tomorrow (Thursday), from 10am to 4pm, during which designs for the development will be on display. The event will also give local residents an opportunity to voice their comments on the proposals.

“The houses are all 2 or 3 bedroom semi-detached or detached homes,” the statement explained. “The site is situated directly opposite Lurgan Hospital and is currently underdeveloped.”

The new houses are set to be built at the old Baird’s factory site, which has been a ‘trouble spot’ for quite some time - attracting anti-social behaviour and causing nuisance for nearby homeowners.

Alderman Carla Lockhart described the plans as a ‘boost’ after meeting the developer: “This is a fantastic investment in the Mourneview area, bringing much needed homes to this area.

“This development will bring a boost to the local economy. The old Baird’s factory site has been problematic for a number of years, bringing substantial disturbance to the residents of The Willows.

“I hope that when development starts on this site, it will go some way to quash this behaviour. I have worked hard to assist in the clearing of this site and believe this new development will transform and regenerate the area.”
