New information video about palliative care

A recent survey carried out in Northern Ireland showed that more than half (53%) of adults reported they only had a basic understanding of palliative care.

The Northern Trust with support from the All Ireland Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care (AIIHPC), has therefore developed an informative cartoon style video, to help people find out what exactly palliative care is, how they can plan ahead and how Trust staff help people to live well until the very end.

The survey was carried out by (AIIHPC) and was of public understanding of palliative care in Northern Ireland. It showed, for example, that 52% identified ‘pain management’ as the most important part of a good experience of palliative care. It also found that 34% of people were not aware that palliative care may be suitable for a number of years and 20% were not aware that the approach supports family, friends and carers during an illness and afterwards.

This video seeks to raise awareness of many issues highlighted in the survey.

Fiona Gilmour, Macmillan Service Improvement Lead for Palliative Care said; “We know that people don’t really understand what palliative care is, they get frightened and think they are going to die soon. So we wanted to describe what exactly palliative care is and how we can help and support people to the end of their life. The Northern Trust worked in partnership with health promotion, local communities and our palliative care user groups to produce this video and I would like to thank them all for their support and advice. We want as many people as possible to access this information. You never know when you might need it.”
