New local solicitor is introduced

A well-known local legal firm has seen it newest solicitor formally introduced at Banbridge Magistrate’s Court.

Gareth Downey joins the long established firm of Arthur J Downey at Church Street, Banbridge, where he served his period of restriction under the tutelage of his father, Arthur Downey.

A former pupil of St. Mary’s Primary School, Banbridge and St Colman’s College, Newry, Gareth qualified from the institute of professional legal studies at Queen’s University, Belfast.

Introducing Mr Downey at last week’s court sitting in Newry, Lewis Singleton, solicitor, explained the newcomer had formally joined the family firm - established in 1981 - last month.

“I have no doubt, given his legal background, he will conduct himself in a manner the court would expect of him,” said Mr Singleton.

“I wish him well.”

District Judge, Mr Paul Copeland, said Mr Downey’s father was a fellow student of his at Queen’s University and he would welcome him to the court.

He added that he had a prestigious academic training record and wished him every success in his career in the local court and throughout the jurisdiction.

Mr Downey was also welcomed by a representative of the bar and the public prosecutor.

He in turn thanked everyone for their kind words.
