A statement from McDonald’s this week confirmed that a planning application submitted over two years ago has finally got the go-ahead and the news has been greeted with almost unanimous approval on social media, including the Leader Facebook page.

“We are pleased that plans have been approved for our new restaurant in Banbridge,” a McDonald’s spokesperson said.

“The drive-thru restaurant will bring over 75 new jobs, both full and part-time, and will provide significant investment for the town.

“Those employed at our new Banbridge restaurant will have access to leading training schemes, as well as the opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications including adult certificates in Maths and English, apprenticeships in hospitality and even a Foundation Degree.”

Earlier this month Turkington Construction announced a new ‘McProject’ for the company as they revealed they have been awarded the contract for the build of the new McDonalds at The Outlet.

The new restaurant, which is to be built in the car-park at The Outlet, is expected to fling wide its doors in July.

“The building will be the global restaurant chain’s second new build restaurant in Northern Ireland since 2001,” a spokesperson said.

“The new restaurant, featuring a two-lane drive thru, is scheduled for completion in July 2016.

“Follow us for progress updates. We’re lovin’ it!”

Responding to Tukington’s announcement on social media, Ciera Dunlop said: “I’m loving it too!! It’s about time.”

And as the news filtered across Banbridge, Lydia Brown said: “Oooo happy days,” and Shannon Donnelly said: “I know, I am excited”.

Praising the employment boost for the area Glenn Dorrian said: “Brilliant. Fantastic employer with great training and opportunities, I’d advise anyone to work here.”
