Mr Shaw, who stood for the party as a candidate at the last local government election but failed to win a seat, said he has no intention of ever standing for election to political office again.

The recently re-elected chairman of New Mossley Community Group, who works full-time, said he felt he was “selling the party short” as he couldn’t commit enough time to it.

“I have left the PUP to focus on the community stuff. I will always be a good friend of the PUP, but I can’t do everything and I want to be able to focus my time on my community work,” he said.

Mr Shaw explained how the community group is currently working with the Housing Executive and other agencies on plans for a series of environmental improvements in the estate, including power washing kerbstones and tree planting projects involving local schools and churches.

The group is also working with young people and developing new premises in a disused shop unit in the estate.
