New natural play area opens in Springhill, Moneymore

Venture through the woodland at Springhill and discover a clearing with natural climbing frames, rope swings and dens, mystical creatures and thrones, which will capture everyone’s imagination.

Commenting on the natural play area Sophie Atkinson, National Trust Warden at Springhill said: “Natural play is all about children exploring and enjoying the natural environment and here at Springhill we’ve combined natural materials with fixed play elements to create an amazing outdoor play space.

Using our own skilled staff and volunteers the play area was created from natural materials such as tree trunks and willow structures, alongside other play schemes constructed from timber products.

“Children of all ages will be able to get in touch with nature and to create their own stories and games as they play in this natural setting. We hope they have as much fun playing on it as we did making it. We’d love to hear what you think and see some pictures of your own natural creations.”

The National Trust is encouraging children to let their imaginations run wild as they discover the mystical creatures and thrones at Springhill. They can also tick off some of their list of 50 things to do before you’re 113/4 such as playing with sticks, climbing trees, building dens and skimming stones. It’s all about getting outdoors, whatever the weather, running wild and getting muddy, just like we used to do.

The grounds at Springhill are open every day from 10am to 5pm. The visitor centre house and costume collection are open daily until the end of August and weekends in September from 12 noon to 5pm.
