New NWRC Governors linked to UUP and SDLP

NEW appointees to the board of North West Regional College (NWRC), Gordon White and Sean Deehan, have links to the UUP and the SDLP respectively, the Department of Employment and Learning (DEL) has revealed.

Mr White is a former member of the Conservative and Ulster Unionist Party and once made a recordable donation to it.

Mr Deehan’s political activities include holding office as Chairperson of the student council and canvassing on behalf of the Social Democratic Labour Party (SDLP).

DEL were clear that political activity played no part in their appointments.

Employment and Learning Minister, Dr Stephen Farry, recently named the men as two new members to the tech’s Governing Body.

Mr White was elected by the Western Education & Library Board (WELB). His appointment took effect from October 17, 2011 and is for a period of four years and is not remunerated.

Mr Deehan was elected by NWRC students. His appointment took effect from October 26, 2011 and expires on September 30, 2012 and is not remunerated.

Dr Farry said: “Colleges have an important role in supporting businesses, communities and the Northern Ireland economy by meeting local education and training needs.

“These appointments will ensure a qualified and committed Governing Body is in place to provide strategic leadership for the provision of this important service to learners and employers.”

A further education college’s Governing Body is responsible for securing the efficient and effective management of the college, agreeing and monitoring its strategic direction, appointing its senior staff and ensuring that the college acts as a responsible employer.

DEL confirmed that political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, the Commissioner for Public Appointments for Northern Ireland requires the political activity of appointees to be published.
