New Partnership group shows 'Carers Matter'

CARERS from across the district gathered alongside their Craigavon counterparts at an event recently to launch a new support group celebrating their work in the community.

Carers Matter” was created in conjunction with both Banbridge and Craigavon District Policing Partnerships (DPP) on May 27.

District Council chairwoman Elizabeth Ingram and Craigavon Mayor Meta Crozier attended along with a number of keynote speakers who discussed views on local policing as well as issues and advice relating to personal safety and crime prevention for the people for whom they provide care.

Councillor Ian Burns, Chairman of Banbridge DPP, said the partnership event was key to raising awareness of simple safety issues.

“We welcomed the opportunity to work in partnership with the local organisation that supports carers in our district and with Craigavon DPP to ensure that the voices and views of this group are heard in relation to local policing.

“The event also recognised the important role that carers can play in being aware of simple crime prevention measures which they can take to help ensure both their safety and the safety of the people for whom they provide care.”

Chief Inspector Ken Mawhinney, the PSNI Banbridge and Armagh Area Commander, said “Like our partner groups we welcomed this chance to engage with another important group, who work right across our area.

“This was a valuable opportunity to let the Carers group know what we, the police, are doing, but more importantly to learn about them and see where together we can add to their safety and that of those many people whom they support and come into contact with.”

Mrs Patricia Jordan, the Manager of ‘Carers Matter’ (formerly Banbridge and Craigavon Carers) explained what the group does.

“We provide training, advice, information, outreach support and advocacy to Carers living in the Southern area,” she said. “This launch is seen as a positive and exciting opportunity for carers to own and influence services that impact directly upon their lives.”
