Local residents had called for the safety measure to be introduced as the village has experienced substantial growth over the past 10-15 years.

It is hoped that the crossing will be completed in the next financial year.

Speaking after confirming the news, Carla Lockhart said: “I am delighted that the need for this crossing has now been approved.

“I have been lobbying for this for a long time and it is always good to see success particularly when it is such an important issue.

“Although there are traffic calming measures in the area, this is a much needed addition to road safety for Donaghcloney.”

The Upper Bann representative added: “We can never be shy about road safety and this will be welcomed by parents and older people in particular.

“I want to thank Transport NI for reviewing my representations and making plans for this crossing to become a reality.

“It is good to be able to report good news for the area.”
