New plan to revive retail life

A NEW programme aimed at assisting Larne retailers to address the issues they face in the continuing difficult market is about to be launched by Larne council through its economic partnership, Larne Development Forum.

Alderman Roy Beggs, forum chairman, said there is clearly a need to think innovatively in this time of economic downturn.

“it is harder to identify the opportunities in this climate, however, they do exist. We, in the council, aim to assist retailers in Larne to view the alternatives, identify new ways of thinking and doing things in order that our retail sector can continue to adapt and grow,” he said.

Larne’s town development manager, Hazel Bell, explained that the programme is set to begin immediately with 10 places for retailers across the borough.

“It will involve specific, bespoke and defined one-to-one mentoring to examine and build each retail business,” she said.

“Using all the tools available management consultants will analyse, probe, assess and define your business to within an inch of its life. This includes making available mystery shoppers, specialist mentoring and access to a series of retail master classes if you wish.”

Michelle Lestas, partner, Lestas Consulting said: “We are delighted to be managing this programme on behalf of Larne Borough Council as we believe that we can assist retailers to examine the issues important to them, review what they are doing and how they are doing it.

“We are very much aware that this is a challenging time for retail and it is important that businesses take time to examine their approach and stay abreast of the changes happening. This programme will support local proprietors to develop their existing business practice as well as look at new ways of improving profitability.”

Any Larne retailers who are interested in being included on the retail revival programme is advised to get their application in early as only 10 places are available.

The closing date for receipt of applications is Tuesday, March 22 at 4pm.
