New play park on way for Somerset Drive kids?

RESIDENTS of a Coleraine street are hoping to turn a rat-infested dumping ground into a play area for local children.

Neighbours at Somerset Drive have got together to press the Northern Ireland Housing Executive to approve their plans for a play park.

A vacant property was derelict for some time and often used to dump rubbish.

Residents were surveyed about the proposed project and gave their unanimous support to help raise funds and maintain the site for use by toddlers.

A spokesperson involved in the project told The Coleraine Times: “It had become a dumping ground and infested with rats.

“The residents have agreed to take responsibility for keeping the proposed playground and hope it could be used by all children in the community as a safe play area.”

Some work has already begun in clearing the site.

The Housing Executive is currently considering the proposal.
