New prayer book is aimed at helping addiction sufferers

“Prayers and Reflections for those affected by addiction” will be launched in the Centre by Bishop Noel Treanor from 7-8pm.

Compiled by John Taaffe, National Co-ordinator of the Irish Bishops’ Drugs Initiative, the booklet offers a compilation of prayers that are both inspiring and challenging, reflections and testimonies as a resource to give hope, support and the will to carry on to those struggling with addiction, their families and friends.

Mr Taaffe is at present offering training to a team from All Saints’ Parish so that parish members will be better equipped to assist those in need.

The priority is prevention of addiction especially among the youth of the area and another priority is educating the adult population on the harms of alcohol misuse.

Parish Priest Fr Patrick Delargy said: “We will work to promote the message of moderation in alcohol use among adults while advocating a reduction in the marketing and promotion of alcohol. “It is well known that church membership and a sense of belonging are great benefits to those who may be struggling with addiction in family life.

“All Saints wants to offer support for families and assistance to those professionals working in the field. In this regard the church acknowledges the good work done by local statutory agencies such as the Hope Centre, Threshold and the Naomi Centre. All of us want to provide practical assistance and we rely on constant prayer and trust in God’s loving mercy.”
