New safety measures to be introduced at busy junction outside school

A range of new road safety measures are to be introduced at the junction of Monkstown Road and Bridge Road, outside Abbey Community College.

“A road safety issue was highlighted to TransportNI with regards to right turning traffic into Bridge Road from Monkstown Road. The site was reviewed with the PSNI and a series of measures have been agreed and will shortly be implemented. These measures include new road markings to assist those turning right, minor alterations to kerblines, the erection of additional traffic signs and the provision of new pedestrian guard railings,” a DRD spokeswoman explained.

At last Monday night’s meeting of Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council, the proposed new road safety measures were welcomed by DUP Alderman Billy Ball and Councillor Stephen Ross.

“I really do welcome this. It is something that has been going on for some time. I know Monkstown School have always been involved with this,” Alderman Ball commented.

“It is long overdue and I am glad to see TransportNI taking on board the concerns of the school and residents.”
