New store rises from the ashes

A CONVENIENCE store in Whiteabbey village which was gutted in a serious fire 13 months ago was due to reopen today (Thursday, June 30). Despite the efforts of dozens of firefighters who battled the accidental blaze at the Woody’s complex on the Shore Road in May last year, the SPAR supermarket, Ladbrokes bookmakers and Julie’s Kitchen fast food outlet were all extensively damaged.

Now, just over a year later, rebuilding and refurbishment work at the site is almost complete, and the first of the new units was due to open to the public this week.

A spokesperson for McKibben Commercial Property Consultants, agents for the site, confirmed that the SPAR store was scheduled to reopen on June 30, adding that work on the new Ladbrokes and Julie’s Kitchen outlets is expected to be complete within the next couple of months.
