New straw dog emerges Phoenix-like from the ashes of Baley in Coagh

Phoenix could be the name of the new straw dog built in Coagh to replace ‘Baley’ the original attraction destroyed by arsonists.

The giant dog, made from straw bales and displayed in a field on the Coagh-Moneymore road was the mascot for Scrufts 2014 and erected just one week before.

It was set on fire on Sunday evening and has been completely destroyed.

But organiser of the show Philip Lockett said the attack has galvanised the community and now a farmer has come forward to donate bales for a new dog - which is still awaiting a name.

“An Ardboe farmer got in touch and has borrowed us some bales and delivered them to the field,” said Philip.

“The bale-dog has been rebuilt for todays Scrufts show! We are really touched by this show of community spirit.

“The dog will be dismantled at the end of Saturday and taken away, but not before we run a competition to see who can guess its new name,” Philip added.
